Frozen with a side of fear.
According to animal experts, the reason why deer completely freeze and fail to get out of the way when they are faced with the headlights of a moving car in the middle of the night, heading straight towards them is the following:
"Their activity peaks within an hour or so on either side of sunrise and sunset, so their vision is optimized for very low light. When the headlight beam strikes eyes that are fully dilated to capture as much light as possible, deer cannot see at all, and they freeze until the eyes can adjust."
There's nothing worse than feeling frozen or paralyzed. Spiritually it has happened to me many times before, where it feels like a giant python snake has slithered around me, holding me captive and squeezing the life out of me. I think the feeling of claustrophobia comes very close.
What's interesting about this frozen action of the deer not moving out of the way of oncoming danger is specifically connected to its eyes having adjusted to the dark, and then when faced with a bright light, it is simply frozen and paralyzed.
There's a very similar story in the Bible. After Moses would spend time with God on Mount Sinai, he would come down the mountain and meet with the people. The problem was that his face was radiating so much of God's glory, that the people couldn't look at him or speak with him. This actually happened a few times. Here, have a look for yourself:
When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him... But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord. Exodus 34:31-35
When the Israelites looked upon the glorious light of God radiating off the face of Moses, they couldn't look at it, they were filled with fear, frozen, paralytic, like a deer in headlights. So Moses literally had to put a veil over his face. What's interesting about this story is that the Hebrew word for "Veil" used here, is pronounced "Masveh - מסוה," which also means: "To cover up," "To camouflage" or "To disguise."
If you think about it, that's a very sad story. Moses had to disguise and camouflage his face in order to fit in with the people and relay God's light, which was the Word of God, to them in the midst of their darkness. In the New Testament, there was another man who had to do something similar. His name was Jesus Christ. He was the Son of God, known as the light of life, and was God's Word personified into flesh. (See John 1:1-14) Only, the veil and camouflage He wore to disguise himself in order for us to be able to comprehend and look at Him was a body made from human flesh, becoming one of us and dying for our sins, but was resurrected back into his original body after, which John also described in the book of Revelation:
The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. Rev 1:14-15
Wow, just imagine that light coming from Jesus's whole being, it must be blinding. The amazing thing is, you can have that light living inside you all the time. Remember, the more time you spend in the darkness, the more your eyes adjust to the darkness as well, and sometimes you won't even recognize the light of Jesus, because you will be blind, frozen, and paralyzed by it, due to the sins of the world and the desires of the flesh having camouflaged and disguised it, but the more time you spend in the light, in the presence of the light of the world, the Word of God, the more the light will be coming from you, paralyzing and disarming the darkness around you.
Starting prayer for the day: Dear Jesus Christ, the light of the world and the light of my life who became God's word personified in the flesh. Please help me and remind me to never allow my eyes to adjust to the darkness of this world, but to continually spend time with you and let my eyes stay adjusted to the light of life. Remind me to return to you when I am lost in the dark and allow me to see through the disguise and the veil of sin which camouflages the true light from God. Amen.
